Greetings! Thank you for stopping by the Rooting for Growth with Fiona DaCosta blog. This article is the third, in my book series, where I share valuable insights from books I read each month. It is part of my commitment to read a book per month this year. This book, Two Lawyers One Doctor: Breaking Barriers to Achieve Success by Cadine Bramwell was an absolutely relevant and down to earth read. The author is Jamaican and so are her sisters. Interestingly, they are triplets!
If you haven’t seen the previous posts in the book series, here are two quick links to take you to my January and February read:

Without further ado, let’s get straight to the amazing insights from the book I read in March!
Overview of the Bramwell Triplet’s Journey
Two Lawyers One Doctor showcases the inspiring story of the Bramwell triplets: Cadine, Colliet and Colleen, who rose from the challenging environment of Tivoli Gardens, Jamaica to achieve remarkable success in the United States. Their journey features the transformative power of education and unwavering determination.
Two Lawyers One Doctor: The Power of Representation
Cadine Bramwell, the eldest of the triplets didn’t always know that her sisters and herself would ‘amount to much.’ Although, their father (before being murdered) never failed to remind them that they are stars. They were born and raised in Tivoli Gardens, an inner city community in Jamaica that is infamous for crime, violence, poverty and constant social unrests.
In a setting like this, many give up on big dreams or even their will to dream from very early. Notably, Cadine sometimes felt dismayed but pointed out, as the adult looking back – that the power of representation shouldn’t be underestimated.
Oftentimes, success stories, trail blazers and role models play a crucial role in the psyche and actions of others. For many, their will power, void of representation isn’t strong enough and so, physical manifestations of someone ‘like’ them actually ‘making it’ is potent.

For her, it was representation that shifted her gaze from the reality of her circumstances to the possibilities that abound. She recalled seeing someone in her community fighting for their education and succeeding.
Education as a Catalyst for Change: Two Lawyers One Doctor

The Bramwell sisters leveraged academic scholarships to study in the United States, illustrating how access to education can break cycles of poverty and open doors to global opportunities.
Worthy to note, is their pursuit of these scholarships which is a testament to determination and ambition. High School became a whole mission of excellence, as the sisters, who before that didn’t think much of their education.
Their thirst for learning and involvement in extra-curricula activities soon propelled them in rooms where opportunities not only existed, but was seized by them.
Resilience Amidst Adversity: Two Lawyers One Doctor

Notably, growing up in a community like Tivoli Gardens, plagued by violence and limited resources was not easy. The triplets’ perseverance underscores the importance of resilience in overcoming systemic challenges.
From one recount, the sisters’ father was murdered during the season of exams at school and this weighed heavily on them in many ways. Not only was he the breadwinner for their family, but he was also an encouraging father who always expressed his belief in the brilliance of his daughters.
Their resilience to cope during this time, shows unwavering determination to excel.
Two Lawyers One Doctor: Strategic Planning and Goal Setting
The book offers practical insights into setting career goals and strategically navigating the path to academic and professional success. It serves as a guide for aspiring students and even provides tips on how to prepare for international scholarships.
Final Thoughts
Bramwell’s account is not just a personal success story. It is also a blueprint for others seeking to transcend their circumstances through education and determination. It is a compelling read, with vivid realities and emotive tugs. I’d recommend to anyone interested in stories of triumph over adversity and the pursuit of excellence.
